Rep. Crockett Statement on Federal Indictment of Former President Trump

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following statement following the news of the federal indictment of former president Donald Trump for working to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the run-up to the violent riot by his supporters at the U.S. Capitol.

"Today, the most-indicted president in American history has just added new criminal charges to his rap sheet.

"As a former public defender, I have defended—and will continue to defend—our system of law’s presumption that a person is innocent until proven guilty.  However, in my legal opinion, the evidence presented against him so far has been overwhelming. The charges brought against Mr. Trump are clear and the arguments are well-reasoned.  As we all saw too well, Mr. Trump’s conduct to undermine the free and fair election of Joe Biden was, and has continued be, demonstrably unbecoming of his former office and is a stain on very fabric that holds our democracy together.  

"While I do not know how this case will play out nor how it will ultimately be decided, I am proud to see our legal system enforcing the rule of law and protecting our democracy. No one—especially a former president—is beyond either of these."
