Rep. Crockett and Rep. Dexter Introduce CLEAR ID Act to Stop Anonymous ICE Raids and Restore Accountability
WASHINGTON, D.C--Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30), alongside Representative Maxine Dexter (OR-3), introduced H.R. 4843, the “Combating Law Enforcement Anonymity by Requiring Identification Disclosure,” or CLEAR ID Act. The legislation would protect our communities from immigration law enforcement officers who are abusing their position of authority by prohibiting the use of taxpayer dollars to fund immigration law enforcement operations where officers hide their identity and requiring officers to clearly identify themselves both verbally and visibly.
The CLEAR ID Act comes in response to increasing reports of ICE agents detaining individuals while wearing plain clothing, facial coverings, and driving unmarked vehicles, and will ensure that our communities are protected from malicious actors who are attempting to illegally impersonate officers or from officers who weaponize their authority and utilize forceful and dangerous methods of enforcement.
“Using taxpayer money to fund ICE agents kidnapping people off the streets in TX-30 and beyond is un-American and unacceptable,” said Representative Jasmine Crockett. “The CLEAR ID Act will hold ICE officers accountable and prevent them from continuing to instill fear and confusion into our communities.”
“If law enforcement is doing the government’s work, they should have nothing to hide. In Trump’s America, that is far from guaranteed,” said Rep. Dexter. “This legislation responds to the widespread use of deceptive tactics by immigration enforcement—like unmarked vehicles and masked officers—which open the door to impersonators and erode public trust. Transparency is essential for safety and accountability.”
“Alianza Nacional De Campesinas stands behind the CLEAR ID Act because there is already too much violence in society. Too many farmworkers, especially farm working women and their families, have experienced unnecessary traumas; whether from employers, abusive partners, or dealing with a broken immigration system. To have immigration agents disclose themselves is vital for the safety of the public, particularly with reports noting individuals around the country are terrorizing our communities by impersonating ICE. This act goes beyond holding ICE accountable, it promotes the dignity and respect the people deserve” said Alianza Nacional De Campesinas Executive Director, Mily Trevino-Sauceda.
“Real law enforcement doesn’t hide behind masks and unmarked cars. The CLEAR ID Act is about restoring basic accountability—making sure the people enforcing our laws aren’t doing it from the shadows. If you’re acting on behalf of the government, the public has every right to know who you are” said LULAC National President, Roman Palomares.
“Right now, our taxpayer funds are enabling masked, unidentified agents to terrorize and intimidate our communities in immigration raids,” said Naureen Shah, national director of government affairs, equality division, at the American Civil Liberties Union. “Our immigrant loved ones and neighbors should not have to live in fear of being snatched from their communities as they go about their daily lives. Congress must pass the CLEAR ID Act.”
The CLEAR ID Act is endorsed by Alianza Nacional de Campesinas, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU).
