Crockett Votes Against Partisan Cuts in Israel Aid Package
WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following statement after voting against the partisan, inadequate, and fiscally irresponsible Israel aid package advanced by Speaker Johnson and House Republicans.
“Speaker Johnson’s legislative package is a shameful effort to Trojan Horse a conservative wish list of spending cuts into an emergency aid funding bill. Make no mistake: Speaker Johnson’s action is unprecedented – adding spending cuts to an emergency aid bill opens up a Pandora’s Box of partisan politics in times of crisis, and allows members to use life-or-death emergencies like Hamas’ attacks on Israel to ram through partisan spending cuts that would otherwise be dead on arrival.
“This legislative package is a remarkable failure on every level. It excludes humanitarian aid for the people of Gaza who are trapped by this war with little means of escape or refuge. It also excludes aid to the Ukrainians who are fighting for their lives against the same Russian government that hosted Hamas leaders in a state visit last week. It needlessly cuts funds for the IRS, which would make it easier for billionaires to avoid taxes and defund the online free file tool that would save money and time for American taxpayers. And on top of all of that, this bill ADDS roughly $12.5 billion to the deficit as a result of lost tax enforcement revenue.
“House Republicans should be ashamed of this fiscally irresponsible, morally bankrupt, political stunt they call legislation. We can and must do better by advancing a comprehensive aid package to assist our allies in Israel and Ukraine while protecting the civilians of Gaza. I vote NO on this bill.”
