Crockett to Vote No on Johnson for Speaker
WASHINGTON — Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following statement on her intention to vote against Congressman Mike Johnson (LA-04) for Speaker of the House.
"House Republicans continue to nominate candidates for Speaker of the House that fail to represent the values and ideals of the vast majority of the American people. Their latest candidate for Speaker, Congressman Mike Johnson, is an anti-choice, pro-forced birth extremist who voted to overturn the 2020 election and fanned the flames of the insurrectionist violence that took five lives on January 6. He has fought to lift the ban on LGBTQIA+ conversion therapy and has introduced and supported legislation that would impose a nationwide abortion ban. While in Congress, Representative Johnson tried to cut and privatize Social Security, has voted against the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, as has opposed funding to aid our democratic allies in Ukraine. As the country looks to Congress to put people over politics and move forward in a bipartisan manner, Representative Johnson’s track record demonstrates he has no intent to answer this call.
"At a time when American leadership on the international stage is more crucial than ever, we need a Speaker with leadership experience and policy positions that reflect the views of the majority of the American people. Representative Mike Johnson and his six-year tenure in Congress falls far short of that bar. My vote for Speaker remains with the nominee who has vowed to work across the aisle to get the People’s work done – Congressman Hakeem Jeffries."
