Crockett Statement on Texas Court Decision Preserving Abortion Care For Patients Suffering Dangerous Pregnancy Complications

August 4, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following statement following the decision from Travis County District Judge Jessica Mangrum barring the state from enforcing its stringent abortion ban on women who suffer from dangerous pregnancy complications.

"Today’s decision out of the Texas state court confirms that radical ideology and politics should never play a role in dictating what type of healthcare a woman can and cannot receive. The court’s injunction comes a time where the United States is experiencing a disturbing rise in maternal mortality—with Texas ranking as one of the worst states for maternal health care.

"The harrowing and gut-wrenching stories shared by these plaintiffs—Amanda Zurawski, Samantha Casiano, Molly Duane, and others— describe unimaginable pregnancy loss, life-altering health complications, and near-death experiences, all because of Texas’ radical abortion laws. These laws and their consequences were the direct result of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade last year. These women experienced septic shock, permanent damage to their reproductive organs, and psychological harm. The losses and pain these women had to endure has left me heartbroken.

"The only person who should have a final say in women’s health and access to reproductive care is the woman who needs it. The decision is a personal decision, not a political one. I applaud the court’s ruling to prohibit abortion bans from being enforced against health care professionals who provide abortions in emergency medical situations based on their "good faith judgment."

"At the same time, this fight is far from over. I stand with my House Democrats and the American people in working to protect a women’s right to abortion at the federal level."
