Crockett Statement on Death of Migrants in Rio Grande
WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following statement following the news that two migrants, including a child, were found dead on or near Gov. Greg Abbott's anti-migrant buoys in the Rio Grande along the Texas border.
"My heart breaks for the family and friends of these two people, one a young child, found dead near buoys in the Rio Grande. This tragic loss is the inevitable result of Greg Abbott's cruel, dangerous border policies that disregard human life. Governor Abbott constructed buoys and fencing despite countless warnings that these obstructions would lead to the deaths of families and children. This tragedy is a direct consequence of Governor Abbott's policies, and until the court expeditiously acts to grant the Justice Department’s preliminary injunction, we will continue to witness more dead and drowned children, fathers, and mothers.
"Drowning desperate migrants and their children is not the solution to our immigration problems. Fixing our broken visa system is. If Governor Abbott and his Republican friends truly want to address the issues at our border while respecting human dignity and safety, they will stop these cruel, inhumane stunts and work with Democrats to pass comprehensive immigration reform."
