Crockett SNAP Bill Gets Senate Support: Senators Cornyn and Luján Introduce SHOPP Act

July 12, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Crockett applauded her fellow Texan, Senator John Cornyn, and Senator Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico for introducing the SHOPP Act in the U.S. Senate. This is companion legislation to Crockett's bill introduced in the House with Rep. Mark Alford (MO-04) on May 9, 2023.

The “Supporting All Healthy Options When Purchasing Produce (SHOPP) Act” would help families who receive SNAP nutrition assistance to purchase more fruits and vegetables by modifying the Gus Schumacher Nutrition Incentive Program (GusNIP) program to include frozen produce. Currently, low-income families who make use of the GusNIP program can only use this benefit when purchasing fresh produce; the SHOPP Act would make frozen fruits and vegetables eligible for the incentive program and expand its use to families without consistent access to fresh fruit and vegetables.

"Senators Cornyn and Luján know just as well as Congressman Alford and I do that families need the flexibility to purchase the kinds of fruits and vegetables that fit their needs and budgets," said Rep. Crockett. "I'm grateful to them for joining our effort to expand accessibility and affordability of produce for American families, especially with kids at home during the summer months. Whether you live near a grocery store, a farmer's market, or a corner store, you should be able to access nutritious food all year - the SHOPP Act will help make that possible."
