Crockett Response to Speaker McCarthy's Impeachment Capitulation

September 12, 2023

WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following statement in response to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy's capitulation to the far right extremists in his caucus calling for a baseless impeachment of President Joe Biden.

"This impeachment inquiry will soon be exposed for what it truly is: a charade. House Republicans are showing the American people where their priorities really lie: not with public service and good governance, but with helping four-time criminally-indicted Donald Trump move up in the polls. And they’re willing to shut down the government to do it, regardless of the costs to the American people.

“Let me be clear: if House Republicans choose to prioritize impeaching President Biden instead of funding the government, millions of federal workers would be furloughed without pay. Various functions of government would grind to a halt, such as the processing of FEMA claims for Americans suffering from the impacts of Hurricane Idalia or the wildfires in Maui. The consequences would be many and would get more dire with every day we delay passing essential funding bills.

“If House Republicans want to impeach President Biden, they will need to bring forth actual and credible evidence that warrants such action as required by the Constitution. But at the end of the day, there’s absolutely no reason that a political stunt should be prioritized over funding our government, helping process federal assistance for wildfire and hurricane victims, and keeping millions of federal employees on the job. Republicans need to try putting people over politics for once in their political careers, and if they do, I think they might be surprised how much their constituents would appreciate it."
