Crockett Joins Raskin Condemning Use of Oversight Committee as 'Opposition Research Firm for Donald Trump'

September 11, 2023

WASHINGTON – House Oversight Committee Member Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) released the following response to Ranking Member Jamie Raskin's comprehensive statement illuminating the failures of Chairman Comer's bloated, fruitless, and highly partisan 'investigation' into President Biden over the past seven months.

"The statement released by Ranking Member Raskin makes it clear: despite seven months of Republican misinformation and distraction, they have produced no evidence showing that President Biden ever misused his office or position to benefit his family or self – because that evidence does not exist.

"I am appalled that as members of Congress return to Washington to try and pass legislation to keep the government open, Republicans are using the appropriations process to continue their fruitless, time-consuming sham ‘investigation’ into President Biden in a naked attempt to boost Donald Trump’s presidential prospects. Let me be clear: Republicans have already wasted the last seven months of this Committee’s time on this wild goose chase with nothing to show for it. Chairman Comer and the Oversight Committee have received over 12,000 pages of subpoenaed bank records from Hunter Biden, his associates, and others; reviewed over 2,000 pages of suspicious activity reports made available by the Department of the Treasury; and have spent countless hours conducting and reviewing witness interviews, including from Hunter Biden’s own former business partners, as well as federal agents involved in the Hunter Biden investigation.

"Make no mistake: any time an allegation was made, my Democratic colleagues and I took those allegations seriously.  As a former public defender and civil rights attorney, I did what any barred attorney would do – investigated and followed the facts in order to arrive at the truth.  The truth is that no evidence supports the Republican’s claims that President Biden ever engaged in any wrongdoing. And Democrats are not alone in pointing out the fruitlessness of this investigation: conservative political pundits, including some on Fox News, and even some Republican members of Congress, have criticized Chairman Comer’s mischaracterization of the ‘evidence’ produced by this Committee.

"There has not been a shred of evidence to justify dragging this investigation any further on the taxpayer’s dime. But because Republicans are refusing to accept this truth, they are now willing to spend even more federal resources on an investigation that has effectively operated as an opposition research firm for President Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign - all while simultaneously refusing to allocate money for programs that put food on the table for millions of Americans.  If this is not weaponization of government, I do not know what is."
