Crockett Calls for Amendment on the Rules Package to Restore House Oversight's Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties
WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) issued the following statement after making an Amendment on the House Rules package during her first House Oversight Committee meeting:
“In yet another weak attempt to dismantle the human rights of the American people, Chairman James Comer and the House Oversight GOP voted against my efforts to amend the rules package to restore the vital House Oversight Committee’s Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at a time when we need this subcommittee the most.
“The House GOP is consumed with reversing decades of progress in this country, but the only way the House Democrats are moving is forward. This will not stand. Full stop.
“As the nation mourns the brutal and senseless cop killing of Tyre Nichols, it is our responsibility to ensure that another tragedy like this never happens again, and the work of the subcommittee would do just that. The passage of the amendment and the restoration of the Civil Rights subcommittee would show the American people what this committee stands for – whether we will waste the taxpayers’ time and money on phishing expeditions, or whether we will dedicate ourselves to holding those who violate the civil and human rights of our constituents accountable.
“The rules as written send the unmistakable message to the American people that their civil rights and civil liberties are no longer a priority to the 118th Congress as they have been in past sessions of Congress. The current rules package buries civil rights as one of over a dozen charges of that subcommittee, when upholding Americans’ civil rights and liberties should be one of the core functions of this committee.
“In addition, it is highly offensive for my colleagues across the aisle to use their platform on this ever-powerful committee to relay false equivalencies when discussing police brutality as my colleague, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene did in yesterday’s full committee meeting. The Oversight GOP is attempting to deceive the American people into believing that the senseless and brutal murder of Tyre Nichols, an innocent man killed by bad cops, is comparable to the death of Ashli Babbitt – an insurrectionist who lost her life while compromising our beloved democracy and its people. This fallacious comparison is against everything I stand for, and this dangerous rhetoric will not be tolerated by me, nor my House Democratic colleagues.
“I stand firm in my commitment to protect and defend the American people and will use my power in this esteemed committee to fight for accountability and transparency at all costs.”
