Crockett Appointed to the Powerful House Committee on Oversight and Accountability

January 28, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) has been appointed to serve on the powerful House Committee on Oversight and Accountability (Oversight Committee). The Oversight Committee is the principle investigatory committee in the House of Representatives charged with increasing transparency in the federal government and holding bad actors accountable.

“It is with great pride to announce that I have been appointed to serve on the House Committee on Oversight Accountability where I will be a watchdog for the American people in 118th Congress,” said Congresswoman Crockett. “I urge my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to work with House Democrats in good faith to uphold our constitutional responsibility to do the people’s business instead of pushing a partisan agenda, manufacturing crises, and abusing the power of this committee for political theater. This committee should be focused on good governance and ending fraud, waste, and abuse of federal resources. I will be focused on our government’s effectiveness and efficiency, and will continue my track record of increasing accountability and transparency for the American people. My commitment to the American people is that I will remain focused on bringing true oversight and reform to our federal government and I will use every legislative maneuver in our toolbox, just as I did in Texas. I look forward to working under the leadership of Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (MD-08) to uphold integrity, truth, accountability, and justice. Our work has just begun.”

Congressman Crockett is a former public defender and criminal defense attorney who comes to Congress with a unique skillset and an unwavering commitment to breaking the barriers that are the foundation of inequity, while upholding the U.S. Constitution.

“I’m excited to welcome to the Oversight and Accountability Committee Rep. Jasmine Crockett, whose passion to make government work for the people will be a major new boost for our Committee,” said Ranking Member Jamie Raskin. “I look forward to partnering with Rep. Crockett to defend the truth this Congress and ensure an effective and efficient government that works to promote the common good.”

“I know Jasmine is the right person for this job,” said former Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. “She is vigilant, sharp, and always stands up for what is right. Her legal acumen will serve her well, just as I know she will serve the state of Texas and the United States of America faithfully. I am proud of her and I always knew she would be a leader in the halls of Washington.”

The Oversight Committee has the congressional authority to investigate any matters that fall under its legislative jurisdiction, and also has legislative jurisdiction over Washington, D.C., the government procurement process, federal personnel systems, and other oversight matters across the government. This committee is one of only three committees that allows the Chair unilateral subpoena power.
