Crockett Applauds Wins for Texas in One-Year Farm Bill Extension

November 17, 2023

WASHINGTON — Today, following President Joe Biden's late night signature of a one-year Farm Bill extension, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) applauded the work of her fellow House Agriculture Committee Members and members of the Senate Agriculture Committee to pass a comprehensive extension that includes full funding for essential Farm Bill programs until a five-year extension can be passed in 2024. This extension preserves existing funding levels for one full year for programs of high priority for Texans that Rep. Crockett has championed, including:

  • Scholarships for 1890 land grant institutions, including Prairie View A&M University in Texas, to allow these institutions to continue providing students opportunities to study at HBCUs on a full ride scholarship. Rep. Crockett is an original cosponsor of legislation advanced by Ranking Member David Scott (GA-13) to make these scholarships a permanent part of the five-year farm bill reauthorization.
  • Feral Swine Eradication Program, which protects Texas farms from an invasive species destroying crops and raising prices on grocery store shelves. Rep. Crockett is the Democratic co-lead on language to reauthorize the program in the full five-year farm bill.
  • Farm to Food Bank Program. Rep. Crockett has worked hand in hand with North Texas food banks throughout her first year in Congress, introducing multiple pieces of legislation to benefit them, such as the Delivering for Rural Seniors Act.
  • Emergency Citrus Disease Research, including research spear-headed by Texas A&M University.
  • National Organic Certification Cost Share, which helps small organic farms in urban districts like TX-30 bring their produce to market.
  • Uninterrupted funding for the Supplementary Nutrition Assistance Program, a top priority for TX-30 amid lingering food price inflation and high housing costs.

"Texas farmers, ranchers, producers, and families depend on the programs funded by the Farm Bill to keep grocery costs down, mitigate the impacts of climate change and disease on crops and livestock, and ensure our food supply chain runs smoothly. Despite the chaotic mismanagement displayed by House Republican leadership, the House Agriculture Committee has been a rare bastion of bipartisanship, collaboration, and compromise - and thanks to members on both sides of the aisle, we've been able to ensure comprehensive and uninterrupted one-year funding of Farm Bill programs that millions of Americans rely on," said Rep. Crockett. "While we've been able to avoid a disastrous defunding of America's farmers and ranchers, we have still only managed to kick the can down the road for another year. I remain optimistic that we can pass a full reauthorization of the Farm Bill in 2024 that will preserve funding for top Texas priorities, including the Feral Swine Eradication Program, the Farm to Food Bank program, and full funding for SNAP - WITHOUT cutting benefits for our seniors!"

On Thursday evening, November 16, President Biden signed into law Congress' continuing resolution that will extend the 2018 Farm Bill until Sept. 30, 2024. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett serves as a member of the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture and the Subcommittees on Nutrition, Foreign Agriculture, and Horticulture; General Farm Commodities, Risk Management, and Credit; and Commodity Markets, Digital Assets, and Rural Development.
