Congresswoman Crockett: House Republicans' Proposed Budget Cuts Would Cost TX-30 Millions

March 23, 2023

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) issued the following statement after federal agency heads released information confirming the disastrous potential impacts of House Republican Leadership’s proposed budget cuts. The proposal to cut fiscal year 2024 discretionary spending back to the fiscal year 2022 enacted level would result in a cut of at least 22 percent for essential programs, including Pell Grants, Head Start, WIC, Section 8 housing, Community Health Centers, and more.

"With these proposed budget cuts, House Republican Leadership is treating our federal government like a mattress store going out of business sale: everything must go," said Congresswoman Crockett. "Many of the Dallas families I represent are just barely scraping by as it is—and now some politicians are trying to defund the programs they depend on to keep their babies fed and a roof over their head. If we want cut the deficit, let's talk about raising taxes on corporations and the wealthiest individuals—not putting air traffic controllers out of work. This ain't it."

Some of the other major impacts to programs highlighted in letters from the Biden Administration make clear that:

  • After recent near-misses, our air travel would come to a halt with 125 Air Traffic Control Towers shutting down, impacting one-third of all Airports.
  • These cuts would impact all 6.6 million students who rely on Pell Grants, and 200,000 children will lose access to Head Start childcare
  • 1.2 million women, infants, and children would lose vital nutrition assistance they receive through WIC
  • 640,000 families would lose access to rental assistance and more than 430,000 low-income families would be evicted from Section 8 housing
  • An estimated 2 million vulnerable individuals and families, including rural and underserved populations, would lose access to health care services through Community Health Centers.
  • The Social Security Administration would be forced to close field offices and reduced access to in-person services, and people applying for disability benefits would wait an additional 2 months for the processing of claims.
  • Over 45,800 aircraft hours and 11,400 boat hours executed by Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations could be cut, a 56 percent reduction in operational capability, and our ability to secure the border and combat drug trafficking would be undermined, allowing into our country more than 154,000 pounds of cocaine, 850 pounds of fentanyl, 1,900 pounds of heroin, and 17,000 pounds of methamphetamine.
