Rep. Crockett Introduces the FREE SPEECH Act of 2025
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (TX-30) introduced “The Freedom from Regulatory Enforcement and Evaluation of Speech Policies to Ensure Editorial Choice Hold Act of 2025” or the “Free Speech Act of 2025”. This legislation would ensure the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) cannot be weaponized by any presidential administration to push partisan politics onto the American people.
“The Republican Party has demonstrated that free speech clearly isn’t free for everyone,” said Rep. Crockett. “The Free Speech Act of 2025 will prevent the FCC from using its power to unlawfully censor voices or force media companies to align with a political agenda. That kind of overreach is a direct step toward authoritarianism. It is critical that we add these protections so Americans can freely express their opinions—without fear, without coercion, and regardless of politics.”
The Free Speech Act of 2025 makes it clear that:
- The FCC cannot condition approvals for mergers, licenses, or acquisitions on whether a company’s speech aligns with the political views of the sitting President;
- The FCC cannot issue rules or orders compelling companies it regulates—such as broadcasters, telecommunications firms, or internet providers—to adopt or suppress political viewpoints;
- The FCC must remain independent, safeguarding a level playing field for speech rather than serving as a political tool for any administration.
