Crockett Demands Trump Reverse Catastrophic Funding Freeze on Federal Grants and Loans

January 28, 2025

Decision could cut funding for police, emergency responders, schools, healthcare services, Head Start, food banks, cancer research, veteran housing, and more

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Crockett slammed President Trump’s illegal and unconstitutional action to freeze new and ongoing funding for federal grants and loans that is set to take effect today, January 28, 2025 at 5:00 PM. Crockett released a statement demanding Trump reverse this decision and preserve essential funding for programs like Head Start, Meals on Wheels, federal food assistance, housing assistance, and any other program that depends in whole or in part on federal funding.

"With the flick of a pen, Donald Trump has unleashed a constitutional crisis that could cut off funding for hundreds of government programs that millions of Americans depend on—including funding for schools, hospitals, law enforcement, emergency responders, food assistance, and more. Let me be clear—this is an illegal, unconstitutional action that usurps Congress’ power and authority in order to move forward with Donald Trump's promise to act as a Dictator on Day One of his second term. Make no mistake: this is the point of no return for our country. If Donald Trump is allowed to seize Congress' constitutionally-granted spending power and unilaterally dictate which parts of our government get funded and which do not, there will be no checks and balances on his power and no co-equal branches of government.

“Trump’s decision will heavily damage states like Texas. According to the Pew Research Center, nine states receive over 45 percent of their overall budgets from the federal government: Louisiana, Alaska, Arizona, South Dakota, Wyoming, Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Mississippi.

"It is hard to overstate how catastrophic this action will be for North Texas if it is allowed to move forward at 5:00 PM this evening. Already, my colleagues in Texas and in states across the country are reporting disruptions to Medicaid portals for healthcare providers due to chaotic and mishandled directives from the Office of Management and Budget. If this decision is not reversed, thousands of Texans could be kicked out of life-saving cancer research trials, tens of thousands of Texas children could wake up tomorrow without access to Head Start education and childcare, hundreds of thousands of Texas seniors could be left hungry without access to Meals on Wheels, renters could lose access to housing and utility assistance, and millions of Texans, including veterans, could be left without access to healthcare. Donald Trump and his billionaire puppetmasters are risking economic collapse and the mass suffering of millions of Americans in their pursuit of absolute power, and they must reverse course now before the destruction becomes irreversible."
